"Remember When"

Remember when you faced the world on your own
Everyone left you to fight your battles alone.
On life's battlefield you stood, defending yourself against each attack
The only thing you knew was to your past you would not go back.
Remember when from the world you hid your face
Afraid to tell anyone, the haunting memories you tried to erase.
Washing over you were feelings of shame
For you were the one taking all the blame.
Remember when silence stole your voice
Threatened and controlled, to live your own life in freedom was not a choice.
Without a trace your innocence disappeared
People you once trusted to protect you became the ones you feared.
Remember when from your life you wanted to run away
Because it felt as if you lived in an emotional prison everyday.
Cold, formidable barriers guarded your heart
Bearing unspeakable pain, you watched it tear apart.
Remember when you lost yourself out there
Facing the unknown gave you the biggest scare.
You had no place to call home
Trying to find where you belonged, you were always on the roam.
Now take a look at where you are today
Fighting back with all you had you found your way.
Trials made you stronger where a different person you became
As you began taking back your life, you discovered it didn't have to be the same.
From victim to survivor you continue to rise above the past
The odds people bet against you were ones you managed to outlast.
Who you are they cannot destroy
Ending their game, you're not their toy.
Now you see your life in a new light
Knowing when it comes to helping others, what you went through provides you more of an insight.
Maybe the past cannot be undone
But you can serve as a beacon of hope to those climbing that mountain.
Back then you didn't have a hand to hold onto
Now is your chance to reach out as you help others make it through.
Your life story of survival sets an example for them to follow
In their eyes, you are an inspiration and hero.
Where you came from you'll never forget
However, it's a new way of life you've met.
Remember when those chains you broke
How it felt when finding freedom again, the truth you finally spoke.
